Editor’s Note: I first wrote this post when the boys were 4,3 and 1. While our summers are a little different now that they are older, I really look back on these adventures with such fond memories. We don’t get to go to as many of these anymore due to age, camp schedules and me working but there are so many amazing things to do with kids! I hope that you enjoy these as much as we did!
A few years ago, I started a tradition with my boys that has since become one of our favorite summer activities: Field Trip Fridays. The idea was simple—dedicate one day each week to a special outing. While I would love to take them somewhere exciting every day, the summer is long, and our budget doesn’t stretch to daily visits to the zoo or museum. Instead, we’ve found that having one special trip each week gives us something to look forward to and creates wonderful memories.
Field Trip Fridays have turned into a highlight of our summer. It’s amazing how this simple concept has enriched our lives, providing not just entertainment but also education and quality time together. Whether we’re exploring a new park, visiting a local farm, or discovering hidden gems in our community, each trip becomes an adventure. The boys get excited as the week progresses, eagerly anticipating what Friday will bring.
Setting Fridays aside has also allowed me to plan for extra help when needed. My mom joins us most weeks, providing invaluable assistance, especially when we’re navigating busy city streets or large parks. Occasionally, Justin can take a Friday off work, and it’s always a treat to have him join us too.
At the start of each summer, we sit down and create a list of places the boys want to visit on Fridays. They also make a list of restaurants they’d like to try. While there are perennial favorites like the zoo and aquarium, we always manage to discover some new and exciting destinations each year.
Field Trip Fridays are a fantastic way to explore your city or nearby areas. Over the years, we’ve uncovered countless hidden gems that have enriched our summer experiences.
