The level of decorating we do for Halloween is on par with Christmas. It is always over the top, the theme changes yearly but what can I say, I love Halloween Décor.
When it comes to my Halloween aesthetic it is always going to gravitated to black and white first. I prefer scary to silly Halloween décor and if there is a chance I can fit something Harry Potter into the theme I am going to do that. The last few years I have been working on a few fun ideas that I have mastered executing fairly quickly and I am going to share all of that with you in this post.
Foyer Floating Candles
Last year was the first time we did this in our foyer. We really wanted it to look like the floating candles in the Great Hall at Hogwarts. I ordered the LED battery operated candles from Amazon. I purchased these last year but I would recommend these because they have a remote which makes turning them on a lot easier.
How I attached them. The first thing that I figured out was that the Command Brand Outdoor Christmas light hangers would be great for hanging them flush with the ceiling. They were also clear which I was hoping would add to the illusion. The next thing that I did was attach monofilament line to each side of the candle creating a loop. This allowed me to hang the loop on the command hook and the candle balanced evenly. I attached the monofilament line with hot glue which also worked really well. I hung the candles at different lengths to add another level on interest when you were looking at them. This is how they turned out.
Mantle
I changed up our mantle a lot this year as you can see the differences between 2020 and 2021 below. I have been wanting to do a Harry Potter theme through the entire house and this was my year I made it happen.
My Mom totally rocked out getting me all of these skeletons from the Dollar General by her house. The envelopes I ordered from Amazon. I picked out other things in my house like the vintage suitcase, my Harry Potter books and the Owl statue just to add to the look. The kids also found these crazy glasses for Mad Eye Moody and the spiders that Hagrid had.
Outside
Another décor Item I had been wanting to do for years were the floating witch hats. They ended up being a TOTAL pain because we had two tropical storms and one hurricane in between the time I hung them up and when Halloween actually took place.
For the hats I used the same Command Hooks that I used for the floating candles. I ordered a pack of cheap witch hats from Amazon too. I threaded a small piece of thread through the top of each hat and made a loop. Hung the loop from the hook. At night with the porch lights it looked like they were floating.
Happy Halloween!
