It’s National Polka Day! The high holy day of Minnie Mouse, Marylin, Lucille Ball and Me!
Polka dots are a fun and flirty pattern that are perfect in black, color, mixed with florals and anything in between. It is my absolute favorite pattern and I have more polka dots in my closet than any other pattern! But where did people’s love affair with polka dots start? Well I will tell you!
History
Before we get into my favorite items I want to give you a little history lesson. Although polka dots can be traced back to the time of the Industrial Revolution the first time they were written about was in 1857. An issue of Godey’s Lady’s Book they referred to the pattern on a scarf. Polka Dots gained popularity in America around the 1920’s. In 1926, the winner of Miss America wore a polka dotted swimsuit followed by Minnie Mouse donning the iconic print in 1928 with her matching skirt and bow. By 1930 polka dot dresses were appearing in all of the stores. In the 1940’s Christian Dior launched a line of polka dot body fitting dresses he called the “new look”.
A few more things… The word Polka is polish and means Polish Women. Polka Dots come in a variety of sizes and colors but they are always a pattern of regularly distributed dots.
So who has famously worn them? Well Lucille Ball, Marylin Monroe, Twiggy, Goldie Hawn, Princess Diana and Julia Roberts just to name a few.
So what am I shopping for?
I am always in the market for more polka dots. Some of my most favorite ways to wear them are skirts, bow tops and bathing suits. These items are all on my radar!
As always this is your reminder that dressing is fun! Never take what you are wearing too seriously and be confident in your choices. That is truly what makes people look the most chic and put together.
XO,
Tiffany
